One of the greatest tragedies of the 20th century, especially after WW2, where preservatives were introduced in to our diet, was this idea that cooking was an unnecessary task in the modern home, and that women, who took great pleasure in this activity, could now be liberated from this time consuming activity. This gave a right of passage to food manufactures to not only enter our kitchens but more importantly take control over our dietary intake with the their processed foods.
